World Cup Hero But No European Giant as Emiliano Martínez Transfer Story Gets Stranger

Few goalkeepers have achieved more on the international stage than Emiliano Martínez.

The transfer, however, stalled because Villa refused to sell on Juventus' terms. Villa's director of football publicly stated that Martínez remained an important part of the club's plans and was not for sale.

That decision leaves the 33-year-old in a familiar position.

For Argentina, Martínez is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the country's history. For Aston Villa, he remains a key player under Unai Emery.

Yet the European super-club move many expected has still not arrived.

The irony is difficult to ignore.

A goalkeeper who has delivered on football's biggest stage is still waiting for one of Europe's traditional giants to make the move that defines the final years of his club career.

Whether that opportunity ever comes remains uncertain.
