Manchester City’s Premier League Future Could Be Decided by 19 Rival Clubs as Expulsion Debate Intensifies
Manchester City's financial case could put their Premier League membership under scrutiny, with a potential vote among the other 19 clubs adding another layer to the controversy.

Manchester City’s future in the Premier League could become the subject of a crucial vote involving the league’s other 19 clubs if the question of expulsion reaches that stage, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already historic financial case.
The Premier League is facing growing scrutiny following an independent commission’s findings that Manchester City breached financial regulations over a nine-season period. City have appealed the verdict, while the process of determining the appropriate sanctions remains separate from the appeal proceedings.
According to Sky Sports, any decision to expel Manchester City would require the support of at least 15 of the other 19 Premier League clubs. However, this should not be confused with an ordinary relegation vote, and there is no confirmed public announcement that a new vote has been scheduled.
The distinction is significant. Relegation through a points deduction would be a sporting consequence of disciplinary sanctions, whereas expulsion would involve removing the club from Premier League membership. The latter would carry major implications for the competition's structure, broadcast agreements and commercial revenues.
The league must also ensure that any punishment follows the established disciplinary framework. Its rules provide for an independent commission to determine sanctions, with the available options including substantial fines, points deductions and other sporting penalties.
Manchester City's right to appeal adds another important dimension. The club has challenged the commission's findings, maintaining that the decision contains material errors and that it is innocent of the accusations. The appeal process must therefore be considered alongside any separate proceedings concerning sanctions.
A vote among rival clubs could prove decisive if expulsion is formally pursued, but it would not automatically establish that City should be relegated. The precise legal route, the commission's decision and the applicable Premier League rules would all matter.
For now, Manchester City's future remains unresolved. The scale of the findings has placed the club under enormous scrutiny, but the final outcome will depend on the disciplinary and appeal processes rather than speculation alone.
