The transfer represents a significant statement of intent from Sunderland as they prepare for another demanding Premier League campaign and European football.

The 20-year-old French defender has been one of the emerging talents in Ligue 1, attracting interest from several clubs during the summer window. Méthalie made 27 Ligue 1 appearances for Toulouse last season, establishing himself as an important member of the French side’s defence.

Sunderland’s pursuit of the player had been ongoing for weeks, with negotiations proving difficult before an agreement was finally reached. Recent reports indicate that the transfer package is around €30 million (£25.7m), with €28m understood to be fixed and a further €2m available through add-ons.

Méthalie is capable of operating as a left-back, wing-back or centre-back, giving manager Régis Le Bris valuable tactical flexibility. His pace, physical strength and ability to play with his left foot were among the qualities that made him an attractive target for Sunderland.

The France Under-21 international had also been monitored by Newcastle, but the Premier League rivals ultimately decided against making a move this summer. Sunderland have now won the race for his signature and are set to add another promising young player to their squad.

With Méthalie joining a squad already featuring several French-speaking players, Sunderland will hope the defender can quickly adapt and make an immediate impact at the Stadium of Light.

The signing underlines Sunderland’s strategy of investing heavily in young, high-potential players while building a squad capable of competing domestically and in Europe.
