Mohamed Salah looks set to begin one of the most surprising chapters of his career.

Trabzonspor have officially confirmed that they have opened negotiations with the Egyptian superstar over a move to Turkey after he became a free agent following his Liverpool departure.

The Turkish club announced that discussions with Salah had begun, with the deal expected to be completed after the player travels to Türkiye for medical tests and contract formalities. Reports in Turkey say Salah is expected to sign a two-year contract before being officially unveiled by the club.

The move comes just months after Liverpool confirmed that Salah would leave Anfield at the end of the 2025/26 season, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell. During that time, he scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, won the Premier League twice, lifted the UEFA Champions League and established himself as one of the greatest players in Liverpool's history.

Few expected Salah's next destination to be Trabzonspor.

The Egyptian had been linked with clubs in Saudi Arabia, MLS and several European sides throughout the summer. Even Besiktas were reportedly in talks before negotiations collapsed. Trabzonspor have now moved quickly and appear ready to pull off one of the biggest transfers in Turkish football history.

Trabzonspor finished near the top of the Turkish Süper Lig last season and will compete in European football. Signing a player of Salah's stature would instantly raise the club's profile both on and off the pitch.

For Salah, the transfer offers a fresh challenge after conquering English football.

Instead of taking the expected route to Saudi Arabia, the 34-year-old appears ready to continue competing in European football while becoming the face of Trabzonspor's ambitious project.

If the final paperwork goes through as expected, one of Liverpool's greatest-ever players will soon be wearing the famous claret and blue of Trabzonspor.
