Japan 3–1 Uruguay: Samurai Blue Seal Comeback Victory in Forlán’s Debut

Japan produced a late second-half surge to defeat Uruguay 3–1 in an international friendly at Q&A Stadium Miyagi on Thursday, September 24.

The match marked Diego Forlán’s first game in charge of Uruguay, with the former striker taking over as the Celeste begin a new cycle following the 2026 World Cup.

Japan made the perfect start when Kuryu Matsuki opened the scoring in the 11th minute. The midfielder received the ball from Keito Nakamura before cutting inside and firing a precise left-footed effort into the corner.

Uruguay responded before half-time. Maximiliano Araújo levelled in the 42nd minute after Federico Viñas' initial effort was saved, sending the teams into the break at 1–1.

The game appeared destined for a draw until Japan struck twice in the closing stages.

Kento Shiogai restored Japan's lead in the 92nd minute before Ayase Ueda added a third goal four minutes later, completing a dramatic 3–1 victory for Hajime Moriyasu's side.

The result gives Japan an impressive start to their post-World Cup international cycle, while Forlán's first match as Uruguay coach ends in defeat despite his side recovering from an early setback.
