Abu Farchi Sent Off After Controversial Celebration

Saied Abu Farchi turned from hero to villain in the space of seconds after being sent off for his goal celebration during Israel's 3–1 Nations League defeat to Austria.

The 20-year-old forward headed Israel level in the 55th minute at the Raiffeisen Arena in Linz after Romano Schmid had given Austria the lead from the penalty spot.

Abu Farchi then ran towards the corner, grabbed the flag and used it as part of a celebration that appeared to mimic firing a gun.

However, the exact meaning of the gesture has been disputed. While Reuters and several other reports described it as a gun celebration, other accounts noted that the movement could have been a reference to a snooker or pool cue. Abu Farchi has previously posted about celebrating through his love of snooker.

The referee, Georgi Kabakov, had already shown Abu Farchi a yellow card just four minutes earlier.

He then produced a second yellow for the celebration, followed by a red card, leaving Israel with 10 players immediately after they had equalised.

Playing with the numerical advantage, Austria continued to push for a winner and eventually regained the lead in the 90th minute through Phillipp Mwene.

Sasa Kalajdzic then added a third goal deep into stoppage time to complete the 3–1 victory.

For Abu Farchi, what had looked like a memorable first international goal quickly became a night of frustration. His equaliser had brought Israel back into the contest, but his dismissal left his team facing the final stages with 10 men.

The incident is likely to generate debate over whether the second yellow was justified, particularly given the uncertainty over what the celebration was intended to represent.
