Controversy as Germany Score While Brobbey Is Down

Germany's opening goal against the Netherlands sparked a heated fair-play dispute after Brian Brobbey went down injured before Joshua Kimmich continued play.

The incident occurred in the 32nd minute of Thursday's Nations League clash in Amsterdam.

Brobbey went down in the Netherlands half with what appeared to be a hamstring problem, immediately prompting several Dutch players to appeal for the referee to stop the game.

The referee, Alejandro Hernández Hernández, allowed play to continue.

Kimmich then collected possession and decided not to put the ball out of play. Germany continued the attack, with Karim Adeyemi eventually seeing his close-range effort blocked before Felix Nmecha reacted quickest to the rebound and fired Germany into a 1–0 lead.

The goal immediately caused frustration among the Dutch players, who felt Germany should have shown more consideration by putting the ball out while Brobbey remained on the ground.

Cody Gakpo later described Germany's decision as unsporting, arguing that players normally stop when an opponent is visibly injured.

However, there was no rule requiring Germany to stop. UEFA's interpretation of the Laws of the Game leaves the decision to stop play for an injury with the referee. Players are not automatically expected to kick the ball out whenever an opponent goes down.

Klopp also defended his players after the match, questioning the expectation that Germany should have voluntarily surrendered possession.

The controversy added extra tension to Klopp's first match as Germany coach, although his side ultimately failed to hold on to the lead. Cody Gakpo equalised in the second minute of stoppage time to earn the Netherlands a 1–1 draw.
