Ronaldo Misses Huge Chance Before VAR Heartbreak

Cristiano Ronaldo had a night to forget against Wales.

The Portugal captain had seven attempts at goal but could not find the net as Portugal scraped past Wales 1-0 in their Nations League opener.

And one miss in particular will haunt him.

Early in the second half, Ronaldo found himself in an almost perfect position inside the box, with the goal at his mercy. But instead of finding the net, he sent his effort over the crossbar.

It was a huge opportunity for the 41-year-old, who was searching for another international goal after entering the game with 146 for Portugal.

Ronaldo then thought he had made amends just minutes later.

The veteran forward broke through the Welsh defence, raced towards goal and produced a composed finish in the one-on-one situation.

He turned away to celebrate.

But the joy lasted only seconds.

The assistant referee's flag was raised for offside, and VAR confirmed the decision, leaving Ronaldo visibly frustrated.

It was a brutal sequence for the Portugal captain: a huge miss followed by a goal that did not count.

Ronaldo was eventually substituted in the 67th minute, with Gonçalo Ramos replacing him.

Portugal had João Félix to thank for the three points. His 22nd-minute effort took a deflection before finding the net, giving Jorge Jesus a winning start in his first competitive match as Portugal coach.

But while Portugal walked away with the victory, Ronaldo left the pitch without a goal.

Seven shots. One huge miss. One disallowed goal.

It was certainly not the night Ronaldo had hoped for.
