Ronaldo Misses Seven Chances as VAR Rules Out Goal

Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating night as Portugal opened their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1–0 victory over Wales on Thursday.

The 41-year-old started for Jorge Jesus but failed to find the net despite having seven attempts at goal.

Portugal took the lead in the 22nd minute when João Félix's shot from outside the box took a deflection off Ben Davies before finding the bottom corner.

Ronaldo continued to search for his 980th career goal, but his chances went begging.

His biggest opportunity came early in the second half when he failed to convert Rúben Neves' cross from close range, sending the ball over the bar.

There was further frustration for the Portugal captain in the 59th minute.

Ronaldo raced through onto a defence-splitting pass from Bruno Fernandes and calmly finished past Danny Ward. He celebrated by running towards the corner, only for the goal to be reviewed by VAR.

The review confirmed Ronaldo was offside and the goal was disallowed.

Ronaldo was substituted seven minutes later, with Gonçalo Ramos replacing him.

Portugal ultimately held on for the victory despite Wales creating opportunities of their own. Brennan Johnson hit the crossbar in the second half, while Rúben Dias cleared the rebound from danger.

The result gave Jorge Jesus a winning start in his first competitive match as Portugal head coach, while Ronaldo's wait for his next international goal continues.
