Roberto Mancini Begins Second Italy Spell

Roberto Mancini is back in charge of Italy, more than three years after leaving the Azzurri following one of the most successful periods in their recent history.

Mancini resigned in August 2023, bringing an end to a five-year spell that included Italy's Euro 2020 triumph at Wembley. He has now returned to the national team for a second spell.

His comeback comes at a very different moment.

Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their third consecutive absence from the tournament, and Mancini has been handed the task of rebuilding the national team.

The 61-year-old has already signalled his intention to give youth an opportunity.

His first 34-man squad included nine players receiving their first senior call-ups, including Michael Kayode, Eddy Kouadio, Alessandro Romano and Mohamed Alì Zoma.

Five members of Italy's Euro 2020-winning squad remain involved, but Mancini is clearly looking towards a new generation.

His second era begins on September 25 when Italy face Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico in their opening UEFA Nations League match.

Mancini knows the pressure will be significant, but he has already set an ambitious target, saying he hopes Italy can reach the Nations League final.

“Good football and results are the best remedy,” Mancini said ahead of the Belgium clash.

The coach who delivered European glory in 2021 now has another challenge: rebuilding the Azzurri and restoring them to the level expected of one of international football's most decorated nations.
