Edin Dzeko keeps proving that age means nothing in football

Most footballers begin thinking about retirement when they turn 35.

Edin Dzeko is doing the opposite.

At 40 years old, the Bosnia and Herzegovina captain is still competing at the highest level, and his incredible longevity continues to amaze football fans around the world.

Dzeko first announced himself in Germany with Wolfsburg, helping the club win the Bundesliga title in 2008/09 before finishing as the league's top scorer the following season. His performances earned him a move to Manchester City in 2011, where he won two Premier League titles and became one of the club's most reliable goalscorers.

His career did not slow down after leaving England.

At Roma, Dzeko enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2016/17, finishing as Serie A's top scorer with 29 league goals while recording 39 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.

Instead of fading with age, he kept delivering wherever he went. Successful spells at Inter Milan, Fenerbahçe and Fiorentina followed before he returned to Germany in January 2026 by joining Schalke. His six goals and three assists in just 11 league matches helped the club win promotion back to the Bundesliga.

Dzeko also refused to slow down on the international stage.

He captained Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and remained the country's leader despite entering his forties.

Rather than retiring after helping Schalke earn promotion, Dzeko has now signed a new one-year contract that will keep him in the Bundesliga until 2027.

In an era where many players struggle to stay at the top beyond their mid-thirties, Dzeko continues to compete against defenders young enough to be his teammates' sons.

His secret has never been explosive pace or fancy skills.
