Como 1907’s first-ever Champions League appearance could hardly have gone better. On a historic night at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Cesc Fàbregas’ side produced a sensational performance to defeat RB Leipzig 4-1 and announce themselves on European football’s biggest stage.

Como entered the competition as one of the season’s debutants and the first Italian club to make its European debut in the Champions League proper since the competition’s modern format began. Their journey is even more remarkable considering the club were playing in Italy’s fourth tier as recently as the 2018/19 season.

The hosts wasted little time creating history. Martin Baturina opened the scoring in the 15th minute, becoming the player to score Como’s first-ever Champions League goal. Anastasios Douvikas then doubled the advantage before half-time, sending the home supporters into dreamland.

Assane Diao added a third shortly after the restart, although RB Leipzig briefly threatened a comeback when Andrija Maksimovic pulled one back. Como remained composed, however, and Máximo Perrone completed the emphatic victory in the 90th minute.

From Serie D to the Champions League in just a few years, Como’s remarkable rise has reached another level. Their first European night ended with a statement victory, and the football world has officially been introduced to Como.
