Xabi Alonso Reveals His Chelsea Tactical Plan

Xabi Alonso wants Chelsea to be flexible and difficult for opponents to predict as he begins his first season as the club's manager.

The Spaniard has made it clear that he does not want to force Chelsea into one rigid system.

“We will be flexible in our tactics, in our approaches, game plans,” Alonso said during a pre-season press conference in Sydney.

The Chelsea manager explained that his intention is not to completely change everything that came before him. Instead, he wants to build on what the team already does while introducing his own ideas.

“It’s not that I’m changing everything. It’s about updating. It’s about developing something that they have done with new concepts that each manager has,” he said.

That approach fits Alonso's coaching philosophy. At Bayer Leverkusen, he became known for using different formations and adjusting his tactics according to the opposition and the players available.

His Chelsea squad also gives him plenty of attacking options.

Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estêvão Willian and Geovany Quenda can all operate in different attacking roles, while Alonso has stressed the importance of finding the right balance between players who provide stability and those given more freedom.

“I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well,” Alonso said when discussing how Rogers could play alongside Palmer.

He believes getting the right balance will make Chelsea more competitive both with and without the ball.

That could become one of the biggest tests of Alonso's first season.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for European football. Alonso therefore needs to improve results while giving the team a clearer identity.

His message is clear: Chelsea do not have to play the same way every week.
