Tolu Arokodare Reveals What Surprised Him Most After Dream Ajax Debut

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare says Ajax's winning mentality has impressed him more than anything else after making a dream start to life at the Dutch giants.

The 25-year-old joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers with an option to make the move permanent, and wasted no time making an impact by scoring on his unofficial debut in a pre-season victory over FC Volendam.

Despite finding the net almost immediately, Arokodare says what stands out most is the attitude inside the dressing room.

"My first impression of Ajax is amazing," he told De Telegraaf.

"The mentality is fantastic. Everyone knows what happened last season, and everyone knows what we have to do this season. You feel that as soon as you step onto the training pitch."

Ajax endured a disappointing campaign last season, but Arokodare believes every player is focused on restoring the club to where it belongs.

"Everyone wants to win and get back to the top. I want to help the team, score goals and fight for the squad," he added.

The Nigerian striker completed his move at the end of July after undergoing his medical and signing his contract at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. His deal reportedly includes a €22 million purchase option, and he became the eighth Nigerian player to represent Ajax, following names like Nwankwo Kanu and Finidi George.

Arokodare announced himself just days later when he came off the bench against FC Volendam and scored late to seal a 3-1 win.

The former Genk striker also praised the atmosphere within the squad.

"The players gave me a wonderful welcome. When Marcos Leonardo scored, everyone celebrated with him. It is a very warm group."

He reserved special praise for Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff, describing him as humble and approachable, while also thanking the club's supporters for making him feel at home.

"The club has a winning mentality and always wants to reach the top. As a footballer and as a person, you must always have that mentality."

There was more good news for Arokodare after UEFA cleared him to play in European competition, making him available for Ajax's UEFA Conference League qualifying clash against Shelbourne.

After a goal on his debut and a warm reception from teammates and supporters, the Nigerian striker could hardly have wished for a better start in Amsterdam.
