Thai Football Mourns After Lightning Strike Kills Rising Star Safwan Awae

Thai football has been left in shock after 24-year-old Safwan Awae died when lightning struck the pitch during a Golok FA Cup match in Narathiwat province.

The tragic incident happened on Tuesday evening at Santiphap Stadium in Su-ngai Kolok as heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across southern Thailand. A bolt of lightning struck the field during the semi-final of the regional Golok FA Cup, leaving Awae critically injured and 12 other players hurt.

Emergency medical teams rushed onto the pitch and tried to save the young winger before he was taken to hospital. Despite their efforts, Awae later died from his injuries. Among those injured was a Malaysian footballer, highlighting the scale of the tragedy.
