Super Falcons Face Major Setback After Two Player Ban

Defender Oluwatosin Demehin will miss the final Group C match against Egypt after receiving a straight red card for bringing down Barbra Banda.

Midfielder Jennifer Echegini is also suspended after picking up her second yellow card of the tournament.

Just like that, two important starters are unavailable for Nigeria's biggest match so far.

This is where questions must be asked.

The Super Falcons knew how important the Zambia game was. They also knew another booking or a red card could create serious problems before facing Egypt.

Yet they still lost two key players.

Yes, Demehin probably prevented a certain goal by stopping Banda. Many defenders would have done the same.

But Echegini's suspension feels more avoidable. Picking up unnecessary yellow cards in tournament football can end up hurting the whole team.

Now coach Justin Madugu has another headache.

He must rebuild both his defence and midfield in a match Nigeria simply cannot afford to lose.

The good news is Nigeria still have quality replacements.

Shukurat Oladipo could replace Demehin in central defence, while Halimatu Ayinde or Toni Payne could step into midfield.

But changing two important positions just days before a decisive game is never ideal.

There was at least one positive after the Zambia victory.

Woman of the Match Michelle Alozie was selected for a routine anti-doping test after producing one of the best defensive displays of the tournament. The Chicago Stars defender stayed behind after the match to complete the mandatory CAF procedure and later praised the team's fighting spirit instead of focusing on her individual award.

That is the attitude Nigeria need.

The Super Falcons have already shown they can survive with 10 players.

Now they must prove they can survive without two regular starters.

Winning WAFCON is not only about beating opponents.
