The result gave José Mourinho a winning start on his return to the Real Madrid dugout, although his side had to work until the final moments to overcome a determined Espanyol team.

Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for Madrid with a powerful header after being picked out by Arda Güler. The England international rose highest to give Los Blancos an early advantage and appeared to put Mourinho’s side in control.

Espanyol, however, refused to fold. Álex Calatrava restored parity in the first half after a well-worked attacking move, ensuring the hosts went into the break level with the Spanish giants.

Madrid continued to push after the interval, with Bellingham coming close again while Federico Valverde struck the post. Espanyol goalkeeper Dmitrovic also produced important saves to keep his team in contention.

Just when the match appeared destined to finish as a draw, Madrid found their breakthrough. Kylian Mbappé played a crucial role in the build-up before substitute Carlos Espí reacted quickest inside the box to fire home the decisive goal in the closing stages.

The victory will provide Mourinho with an important early boost, particularly given the pressure surrounding his return to the Santiago Bernabéu. Madrid showed character to keep pushing until the final whistle and leave Barcelona with maximum points.

For Espanyol, it was a painful defeat after an impressive performance, but Real Madrid will celebrate a hard-earned opening victory that could prove significant as the title race develops.

FT: Espanyol 1-2 Real Madrid.
