Pressure Mounts on Carrick After United Defeat

Pressure is beginning to mount on Michael Carrick after Manchester United suffered a 1–0 defeat to Manchester City in Sunday's Manchester derby.

Erling Haaland's second-half goal condemned United to another disappointing result at Old Trafford, leaving Carrick's side with just one victory from their opening four Premier League matches.

The defeat has intensified scrutiny on Carrick, who was appointed Manchester United's permanent head coach after an impressive spell as interim manager last season.

United finished third in the Premier League under Carrick last term, with the former midfielder winning 12 of his 17 league matches in charge. That success raised expectations ahead of his first full season at the club.

However, United's start to the new campaign has been underwhelming. They lost to Hull City on the opening day, drew with Everton and then recorded their only league victory against Ipswich Town before Sunday's derby defeat.

The loss to City was particularly frustrating because Pep Guardiola's side were reduced to 10 men during the first half. United were unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority and ultimately left Old Trafford without a goal.

Carrick was also unhappy with the decision to allow Haaland's winning goal to stand. The goal had initially been ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision.

The refereeing body Pro Ref subsequently admitted that VAR had made an error by failing to properly consider Enzo Fernández's involvement in the move, while the officials involved have been stood down from the following Premier League round.

Despite the growing scrutiny, there is currently no clear indication that United have decided to sack Carrick.

Reports instead suggest that the club's hierarchy remain willing to give him time, meaning his immediate future is likely to depend heavily on how the team responds in the coming weeks.

Carrick himself has remained defiant following the derby defeat, insisting that the result and the controversy surrounding the goal will not determine the entire season.

United now face Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before their next Premier League fixtures, giving Carrick an immediate opportunity to steady the team and ease some of the pressure surrounding his position.

For now, reports of an imminent sacking would be premature. But with Manchester United sitting 13th after four league matches, the pressure on Carrick is undoubtedly increasing.
