Pep Chavarría: The Boy from Figueres Who Took the Long Road to Chelsea

There are footballers who arrive early. At 16, the world knows their names. At 18, they are playing in packed stadiums. At 20, the biggest clubs in Europe are fighting over them.

And then there is Pep Chavarría. At 28, when many players are already being described as veterans, Chavarría has just completed the biggest move of his life. Chelsea have signed him from Rayo Vallecano on a contract until 2031.

For many Premier League fans, the announcement probably came with the same reaction: “Pep who?”

But that is exactly what makes his story interesting.

Because Pep Chavarría did not grow up as football's next big thing. He had to become it.

Josep María "Pep" Chavarría Pérez was born on 10 April 1998 in Figueres, a city in Girona, Catalonia, Spain.

Football began for him locally, at Unió Esportiva Figueres (UE Figueres), where he came through the club's youth system.

There was no glamorous academy story. No famous football family. No straight road to Barcelona, Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid.

Just a young boy trying to make it through football.

And even his position was not originally written in stone.

Chavarría began his development in more advanced positions on the left side before being moved backwards and converted into a left-back.

That change would eventually shape his career.

He became an attacking full-back — quick, aggressive, energetic and comfortable pushing forward.

But first, he had to survive the lower levels of Spanish football.

Chavarría made his senior debut for Figueres at 18.

He stayed there until 2018 before moving to UE Olot.

This is where his story becomes particularly important.

While football fans were watching wonderkids being developed at Europe's biggest academies, Chavarría was grinding his way through the Spanish system;

Olot.

Then Real Zaragoza.

Then Rayo Vallecano.

At Zaragoza, he finally began to establish himself as a serious professional. Between 2020 and 2022, he made 74 league appearances for the club.

But even then, he was still nowhere near the glamorous world of elite European football or even Premier League football.

He was simply hustling.

Training.

Working.

Playing.

Improving.

Waiting.

And waiting.

In 2022, Rayo Vallecano came calling.

It was a huge step.

But even then, Chavarría was not immediately a household name.

He had to earn his place.

And eventually, he did.

He made his La Liga debut at 24 years old.

Think about that.

For most elite footballers, 24 is already the age at which people are discussing Champions League performances, international caps and massive achievements.

For Chavarría, it was the beginning of his life at the top level.

He was finally playing in Spain's first division.

And he wasn't there to make up the numbers.

At Rayo, Chavarría developed into a dependable and aggressive left-back.

He became known for his energy, his willingness to attack and his intensity.

He wasn't simply a defender waiting for the ball.

He wanted to carry it forward.

He wanted to overlap.

He wanted to get involved.

And perhaps most importantly, he developed a reputation for working extremely hard.

That part of his story keeps coming up whenever people who worked with him talk about his development.

One former Zaragoza coach described him as a player who trained at maximum intensity and constantly pushed himself.

That mentality may explain more about Chavarría than any statistic ever could.

Because his career has essentially been built on one thing:

Keep going.

Even after finally reaching La Liga, Chavarría still had another milestone to achieve.

European football.

He eventually got it with Rayo Vallecano.

And his European debut was almost comically Chavarría-like.

It was against Häcken in the Conference League.

And he was sent off.

Not exactly the dream European debut.

But football has never been a straight line for Pep Chavarría.

His career has been full of detours.

The difference is that he kept walking.

By the 2025/26 season, the player who had spent years climbing through Spanish football had become one of Rayo's important players.

He helped the club on its run to the UEFA Conference League final, giving him another experience that would have seemed almost impossible when he was playing lower-league football in Catalonia.

And suddenly, the big clubs were watching.

Including Chelsea. And Xabi Alonso.

Now, the boy from Figueres was no longer simply trying to reach the top.

The top had finally noticed him.

CHELSEA!

Today on 12 August 2026, Chelsea officially announced the signing.

A five-year contract.

A reported initial fee of around £16.3 million, with potential add-ons taking the deal higher.

For someone who had spent so much of his career outside football's spotlight, it is an extraordinary transformation.

He went from playing in the lower levels of Spanish football... To Zaragoza... To Rayo... To European football... And now:

Stamford Bridge.

Maybe it is how long he had to wait.

Football is obsessed with youth.

If you're 18, you're "one for the future."

At 21, you're "a rising star."

At 24, people start asking whether you have already reached your ceiling.

At 28?

You're supposed to be established.

Chavarría chose a different timeline.

He didn't explode onto the scene.

He climbed.

One club at a time.

One training session at a time.

One opportunity at a time.

And now, almost two decades after entering the football system in Figueres, he is walking into one of the biggest clubs in England.

There is something beautiful about that.

He probably didn't dream about Zaragoza.

He probably didn't dream about fighting for his place at Rayo Vallecano.

He certainly dreamed bigger.

But those supposedly small steps were the ones that eventually carried him to London.

It is the story of the footballer who kept knocking until somebody finally opened the door.

And today, that door is Stamford Bridge.

From Figueres to Chelsea.

From the lower leagues to the Premier League.
