OFI Crete: From Amateur Football to the Europa League

Few football stories capture the power of a comeback quite like that of OFI Crete.

In 2015, the Greek club reached one of the lowest points in its history. Serious financial problems forced OFI to withdraw from professional competitions, ending a remarkable 47-year run in professional football and sending the club into amateur status.

For a club with such a proud history, it was a devastating moment.

But more than a decade later, the picture could hardly be more different.

OFI have rebuilt themselves and returned to the biggest stages of Greek football. Last season, their revival reached a historic milestone when they defeated PAOK 3–2 after extra time to win the 2025–26 Greek Cup. It was only the second Greek Cup triumph in the club's history and their first since 1987–88 — ending a wait of almost four decades.

That triumph also opened the door to Europe.

As Greek Cup winners, OFI entered the Europa League qualifying play-offs, where they faced CSKA Sofia. Rather than allowing the occasion to overwhelm them, the Cretan side produced an emphatic 5–0 aggregate victory, winning 3–0 at home before completing the job with a 2–0 victory in Sofia.

And now, the journey has reached another extraordinary chapter.

Tonight, OFI Crete will play in the UEFA Europa League league phase.

Their opening fixture is a home meeting with Hoffenheim, with the game scheduled for September 17.

The contrast with 2015 is staggering. A club that once had to step away from professional football because of financial difficulties is now preparing to welcome European opposition to Crete.

And this is not simply a return to European football. OFI's 2026–27 Europa League campaign will also feature fixtures against Rennes, Bayer Leverkusen, Hapoel Be'er Sheva, Anderlecht, Benfica, Sturm Graz and Lech Poznań.

From amateur football to Greek Cup champions. From financial turmoil to European nights.

OFI Crete's story is a reminder that in football, the darkest chapters do not necessarily define the ending.
