Michael Carrick Urges Calm After Manchester United Suffer Shock Defeat To Hull City

Michael Carrick has urged Manchester United supporters and his players to remain calm after the Red Devils suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their opening Premier League fixture of the 2026/27 campaign.

United endured a frustrating afternoon at the MKM Stadium, with Hull producing a disciplined and aggressive display to claim a memorable victory on their return to the Premier League.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the first half before Nobel Mendy doubled the hosts’ advantage, with both goals exposing weaknesses in United’s defending from set pieces.

The result was a major setback for Carrick, particularly after United finished third last season and entered the new campaign with renewed optimism surrounding the team.

However, the Manchester United boss refused to allow one poor performance to dictate the wider assessment of his project.

“One game doesn’t change the whole direction of everything, but we need to be aware where we need to improve,” Carrick said after the match.

The former United midfielder acknowledged that his side had plenty of work to do, while insisting that the defeat would not derail the progress made under his management.

“We’ll stay calm, in our bubble… it’s one game,” Carrick added.

His message was clear: United must learn from the defeat without allowing disappointment to turn into panic.

Carrick will nevertheless know that the performance raised serious questions. United struggled to create clear-cut opportunities and were repeatedly second best in terms of intensity and physicality.

Hull, meanwhile, defended their lead impressively and frustrated United for long periods after the break.

United’ defensive problems will be particularly concerning for Carrick. Conceding twice from set-piece situations highlighted a vulnerability that opponents are likely to target unless United find an immediate solution.

There were also concerns in midfield and attack, where United struggled to establish control or consistently threaten Hull’s defence. New midfield additions Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos were unable to impose themselves before being substituted, while the second-half introduction of Marcus Rashford failed to produce the attacking spark United desperately needed.

Despite the disappointment, Carrick’s response reflects his belief in the long-term direction of the club. Rather than making dramatic conclusions after one result, the manager appears determined to analyse the mistakes, correct them on the training ground and ensure his players respond positively.

For Manchester United, the challenge now is turning those words into action. The defeat may only represent one game, as Carrick insists, but the weaknesses exposed at Hull cannot be ignored.

United’s next fixtures will provide the first opportunity to show whether this was simply an early stumble or a warning sign of deeper problems. For now, Carrick is choosing calm over panic,  but he is sure that improvement must come quickly.
