Messi to Receive UBA's Highest Honor

Lionel Messi is set to receive one of Argentina's highest academic honours just hours before his emotional farewell to the national team.

The University of Buenos Aires has named Messi a Doctor Honoris Causa, its highest honorary distinction.

The university's Superior Council approved the decision unanimously, with the ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, ahead of Argentina's farewell match against Benin at the Monumental.

The honour is being awarded in recognition of Messi's extraordinary career and his influence beyond football.

The UBA specifically highlighted his perseverance, humility and commitment to representing Argentina, as well as the major international trophies won during his time as national-team captain.

Those achievements include the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. The university also recognised Argentina's run to the 2026 World Cup final.

UBA rector Ricardo Gelpi said the institution wanted to recognise Messi not simply for his statistics and sporting achievements, but also for his influence as an ambassador of Argentine popular culture and national identity.

Vice-rector Emiliano Yacobitti similarly described the honour as a recognition that goes beyond Messi's football career.

The timing makes the occasion even more significant.

Just hours after receiving the distinction, Messi is expected to take part in his farewell match for Argentina against Benin on October 6.

The Argentine Football Association has already announced the match as Messi's farewell appearance for the national team, with a special celebration planned at the Monumental.

So, before Messi walks onto the pitch for what is expected to be his final Argentina appearance, he will first receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from one of the country's most prestigious universities.
