Mbappé Explains Why He Left Nike for On: “I Have to Write This Story”

Kylian Mbappé has opened up about his decision to leave Nike and join On, admitting that he initially had doubts about making such a major change after spending almost his entire life with the American sportswear giant.

Mbappé revealed that his first reaction when On approached him was hesitation, but he remained open to hearing the company’s plans.

“Of course, the first time On came to see me, I had doubts because my whole life, I've been with Nike. But I still wanted to talk,” Mbappé explained.

After learning more about On’s vision, however, the Real Madrid forward felt the opportunity represented the right moment for a new challenge.

“After hearing the project in detail, I told myself: ‘OK, I have to do this. I have to write this story.’ I've always done things step by step, and it was the right moment.”

For Mbappé, the partnership goes beyond simply wearing a different pair of boots. He says On has given him the opportunity to become directly involved in creating products and bring his own ideas and football experience into the process.

“I'm at a point in my life where I need to feel thrills, to challenge myself. I'm a different person with different ambitions,” he said.

“They're giving me this opportunity to co-create products, to freely express my creativity, to use my knowledge of the game and my love of football.”

Mbappé also highlighted On’s technology and innovation, believing that combining his football expertise with the company's approach could produce something special.

The French superstar added that he will soon be wearing On boots, although the final product is still being completed.

Interestingly, Mbappé said he wanted supporters to see the development process rather than simply unveiling the finished boots without explanation.

“We're finishing up the product, but it was important to show people all the steps, to share the manufacturing process with them. I didn't want to just show up overnight with my new cleats, like we usually do.”

After years associated with Nike, Mbappé's move to On represents a significant new chapter in his commercial career—and one he clearly wants to help shape himself.
