Speaking during a post-match interview with CBS Sports following United’s disappointing 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid, the Argentine international expressed frustration at the club’s repeated problems, questioning why the same issues continue to dominate discussions every season.

“Every season, we’re talking about the same thing,” Martínez said. “If we don’t say the truth, nothing will change.”

His comments reflect growing frustration at Old Trafford, where expectations remain high despite another difficult start to the campaign.

United struggled to impose themselves against Atlético, conceding early before Ademola Lookman secured the Spanish side’s victory in the second half. The defeat intensified scrutiny of the team’s performances and raised further questions about its ability to compete consistently at the highest level.

However, Martínez made it clear that responsibility should not rest solely on the shoulders of manager Michael Carrick and the players.

The defender argued that the club’s leadership must also be held accountable, suggesting that recruitment and the overall strength of the squad remain important factors in United’s difficulties.

“I expect more from our technical director,” he said in a separate post-match interview, calling for greater ambition and stronger support from the club’s decision-makers.

Martínez also defended Carrick, acknowledging the manager’s efforts while stressing that opponents adapt to a team’s tactics and weaknesses. In his view, United cannot expect different results without making necessary improvements across the organisation.

The Argentine’s outspoken remarks have added another layer of pressure to an already challenging season, with questions surrounding the club’s direction becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

For Martínez, the message is clear: Manchester United must confront its problems honestly rather than repeatedly changing managers and expecting a different outcome.

Whether the club’s hierarchy responds to his criticism remains to be seen, but his comments have reignited debate over the leadership, recruitment and standards required to restore United to the top of European football.
