Louis van Gaal Confirms He Is Cancer-Free After Battle

Former Manchester United and Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed he is now cancer-free after battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

Van Gaal first revealed in 2022 that he had prostate cancer while leading the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. At the time, he kept much of his treatment private so it would not distract his players.

Now, the 73-year-old has shared the news every football fan hoped to hear.

Speaking on Dutch television, Van Gaal said:

"I'm no longer bothered by cancer."

He explained that he underwent several operations and continues to have regular medical check-ups, adding that his health keeps improving.

"Two years ago, I had a few operations. It was all bad then. But it all worked out in the end. I have check-ups every few months, and that's going well. I'm getting fitter and fitter."

The Dutch coach stepped down as Netherlands manager after the 2022 World Cup and has since worked as a special adviser at Ajax. Although he has ruled out a return to day-to-day club management, Van Gaal has admitted he would consider coaching a top national team again if the right opportunity came along.

Van Gaal remains one of football's most respected managers. During his career, he won league titles with Ajax, Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich, lifted the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, guided the Netherlands to third place at the 2014 World Cup, and won the FA Cup with Manchester United in 2016.
