Fede Valverde Hit With Ankle Injury Blow After Madrid Derby

Real Madrid have confirmed that Fede Valverde has suffered a Grade 3 sprain to his left ankle, following the injury he sustained during Sunday’s Madrid derby defeat to Atlético Madrid.

The Uruguay international was injured after a challenge from Atlético’s Kang-in Lee during the first half at the Metropolitano. Valverde managed to continue playing and completed the match, but subsequent medical examinations revealed the severity of the ankle problem.

Despite the Grade 3 classification, reports from Spain currently indicate that Valverde is expected to be sidelined for approximately two to three weeks, rather than the two to three months being circulated on social media. He is therefore expected to miss Uruguay’s upcoming international fixtures, while Real Madrid will hope he can return around the resumption of club football.

The injury adds another setback for José Mourinho’s Real Madrid after their 2–1 defeat to Atlético Madrid, with the club now monitoring Valverde’s recovery ahead of the next phase of the season.

The Madrid derby incident has also remained controversial, with Mourinho criticising the lack of disciplinary action following the challenge that injured his midfielder.
