Karim Adeyemi Is Quickly Silencing the Doubts at Barcelona

Karim Adeyemi’s arrival at Barcelona this summer was met with plenty of skepticism. After an inconsistent final season at Borussia Dortmund, where injuries and a lack of continuity limited him to 1,855 minutes, questions were raised over whether the German forward could truly take the next step at Camp Nou.

Barcelona nevertheless saw something that fitted Hansi Flick’s vision. The club signed Adeyemi from Dortmund for €22 million plus up to €7 million in bonuses, handing him a contract until 2031. Flick was already familiar with the 24-year-old, having given him his senior Germany debut.

The adaptation was not instant. Adeyemi’s early preseason appearances showed his explosive pace and willingness to attack defenders, but also some rushed decision-making. Flick even admitted after his debut that he had seen a better version of the forward in training.

Since then, however, the signs have become increasingly encouraging. Adeyemi’s pace, pressing and ability to operate across the front line have begun to complement Flick’s high-intensity, vertical approach. His versatility allows him to switch flanks, attack space and contribute without needing constant possession.

That adaptation was particularly evident against Levante, when Adeyemi scored a stoppage-time goal after a mazy run to seal a 4–2 victory. He then continued that momentum in the Champions League, scoring in Barcelona’s 5–1 win over Feyenoord.

What initially looked like a gamble is beginning to look increasingly logical. Adeyemi still has areas to improve, particularly his decision-making in the final third, but his early performances suggest he is learning quickly.

For Flick, that could be the most important development of all: Adeyemi isn't simply finding his feet at Barcelona — he is beginning to look like a player built for the football Flick wants to play.
