Javier Aguirre Appointed New Valencia Head Coach

Javier Aguirre has been appointed Valencia’s new head coach on a deal running until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Valencia officially confirmed the Mexican’s arrival on Wednesday, with the club also holding an option to extend his contract for another season.

The appointment marks Aguirre’s return to Spanish club football after a two-year spell in charge of the Mexico national team.

The 67-year-old recently guided Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where El Tri reached the Round of 16 before suffering a 3-2 defeat to England. It was Aguirre’s third World Cup appearance as Mexico coach.

Aguirre now takes over a Valencia side struggling near the bottom of LaLiga. The club have collected four points from their opening seven matches and sit 19th in the table.

He replaces Carlos Corberán, who was dismissed after Valencia endured a poor opening to the campaign. Óscar Sánchez had taken temporary charge before Aguirre's appointment.

Valencia will be Aguirre’s seventh Spanish club. He has previously managed Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés and Mallorca.

His most notable achievement in Spain came with Osasuna, whom he guided to Champions League qualification. He has also won the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice with Mexico, in 2009 and 2025.

Aguirre is scheduled to be formally presented as Valencia’s new head coach on September 28.
