Haaland Fires 10-Man City to Derby Victory

Erling Haaland scored his ninth Manchester derby goal as 10-man Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1–0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

City had to play with 10 men for more than an hour after Phil Foden was sent off in the first half, but Enzo Maresca's side held firm before Haaland settled the 199th Manchester derby in the 60th minute.

The Norwegian initially saw his goal ruled out for offside, but VAR intervened and overturned the decision.

A review showed that United left-back Patrick Dorgu's outstretched foot had played Haaland onside by a remarkably narrow margin. Enzo Fernández was also in an offside position, but VAR determined that he had not interfered with play.

The decision proved crucial as Haaland finished clinically to give City all three points and extend his remarkable record in the fixture.

The goal moved Haaland to nine Premier League goals in Manchester derbies, putting him ahead of former City striker Sergio Agüero and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, who both scored eight.

Even more remarkably, Haaland has reached nine derby goals in just eight appearances.

City's victory was particularly impressive because they played most of the match with 10 men following Foden's dismissal.

Despite having a numerical advantage, United could not find an equaliser. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both hit the woodwork as City defended their lead, while Gianluigi Donnarumma produced important saves to preserve the clean sheet.

The victory also maintained Maresca's perfect Premier League record since taking charge of Manchester City.

City have now won all four of their league matches this season, following victories over Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Coventry City before Sunday's derby triumph. They have scored eight goals and conceded two across those four matches.

The result leaves City on 12 points from four games, level with Arsenal at the top of the table but behind the Gunners on goal difference.

For Manchester United, it was another frustrating afternoon.

The men's team's defeat came after the women's side suffered an even heavier setback earlier in the day, losing 5–0 to Chelsea in the Women's Super League.

United therefore endured defeats against both Manchester City and Chelsea on the same day, making Sunday one the club will be eager to forget.

For City, however, the mood could hardly be more different. Maresca has won his first four Premier League matches, while Haaland continues to rewrite the scoring records in the Manchester derby.
