Falconets Beat England to Reach U-20 World Cup Quarters

Nigeria’s Falconets have reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after producing an impressive 3–0 victory over England in their Round of 16 clash in Poland.

The Nigerian youngsters delivered one of their strongest performances of the tournament on Thursday, securing a comfortable win at the Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała.

Tosin Rafiu gave Nigeria the perfect start when she opened the scoring in the eighth minute. The forward finished a fine move to put Moses Aduku’s side in front and give the Falconets an early advantage.

England had an opportunity to respond from the penalty spot, but Nigeria goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma came up with a crucial save. Uzoma denied Rachel Maltby’s effort and helped Nigeria maintain their lead heading into the interval.

Nigeria then extended their advantage shortly after half-time when Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei found the net to make it 2–0.

The Falconets continued to control the contest and eventually put the result beyond doubt when Mary Mamudu scored their third goal in the 73rd minute.

The 3–0 victory sends Nigeria into the last eight and continues their campaign for a first U-20 Women’s World Cup title.

The Falconets entered the knockout stages after finishing second in Group F with four points. They began the tournament with a 2–0 defeat to Spain and then played out a goalless draw against China before producing a spectacular response against New Caledonia.

Nigeria defeated New Caledonia 10–1 in their final group game, with the emphatic victory securing their passage into the Round of 16.

Their victory over England means the Falconets have now scored 13 goals in their last two matches while keeping clean sheets in both games.

Nigeria, who have finished as runners-up at the tournament twice, will now face either hosts Poland or Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

The quarter-final will give Aduku’s team another opportunity to move closer to a first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
