What happens when a historic football club can not attract enough big sponsors?

Deportivo Municipal found an answer that looks almost unbelievable.

The Peruvian club has put 1,000 sponsorship spaces on a single shirt, turning its 2026 jersey into a giant advertising mosaic as it tries to rebuild after a severe financial crisis. The campaign, called “Los Mil Sponsors del Muni”, was designed to bring hundreds of smaller businesses, entrepreneurs, and supporters into the club's commercial model.

And it worked.

Reports say all 1,000 spaces were taken within roughly three months. The original campaign offered spaces at different prices, from S/100 to S/600, depending on their size. Some later reports have described the campaign using a roughly $60 figure for a sponsorship space.

The result is one of the strangest football shirts you are likely to see this season.

Instead of one or two major sponsors dominating the front of the jersey, the shirt carries a huge collection of smaller names. The design uses a black-and-white checkerboard pattern while retaining Municipal's traditional red diagonal stripe.

But behind the unusual appearance is a serious problem.

Deportivo Municipal has been dealing with major debts and was excluded from Liga 3 because of outstanding financial obligations. The club, therefore, entered the Copa Perú, while its leadership has been working on a wider restructuring plan.

That makes the shirt more than a novelty.

It is an attempt to replace dependence on a few wealthy sponsors with support from hundreds of smaller partners.

The club has even moved toward transforming itself into a Sociedad Anónima, with its members approving the change unanimously in May as part of efforts to strengthen the institution and address its debts.

So, is the shirt ugly?

That is up for debate.

But commercially, Municipal may have stumbled onto something much more interesting: when one big sponsor won't save your club, can 1,000 small ones do it instead?

For a club fighting to survive, that may matter far more than how the shirt looks.
