Bruno Fernandes Under Fire After Manchester Derby Incident as England Questions His Captaincy

Bruno Fernandes is facing heavy criticism in England following Manchester United’s 1–0 defeat to Manchester City, with the club captain’s role in the controversial Phil Foden red-card incident becoming a major talking point.

The flashpoint came in the 23rd minute at Old Trafford. Fernandes kicked Foden while the Manchester City midfielder was on the ground, before Foden reacted by kicking Fernandes in the stomach. Referee Michael Oliver immediately showed Foden a straight red card, a decision confirmed by VAR.

While Foden’s reaction was deemed worthy of a dismissal, Fernandes escaped punishment, prompting widespread debate over whether the United captain had deliberately provoked the incident.

Former players and pundits were particularly critical. Roy Keane and Micah Richards both argued that Fernandes played a significant role in escalating the confrontation, while other commentators questioned why the United captain was not punished for his initial kick.

The criticism has now extended beyond the incident itself, with sections of the English media questioning whether Fernandes' behaviour was appropriate for a Manchester United captain. One particularly brutal assessment described his conduct as “unworthy of a Manchester United captain.”

The controversy becomes even more damaging for Fernandes because United failed to take advantage of having a man extra for more than an hour. City defended resolutely before Erling Haaland scored the winner, securing a remarkable 1–0 victory despite playing with ten men.

For Fernandes, the derby defeat has therefore become about much more than the result — his leadership, temperament and conduct are now under intense scrutiny.
