Argentina Backs Infantino Despite Growing FIFA Revolt

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has officially thrown its support behind FIFA president Gianni Infantino at a time when criticism of his leadership is growing across world football.

In a statement signed by AFA president Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia, Argentina praised Infantino's work over the past decade and expressed its backing for his leadership. The federation also welcomed his decision to withdraw the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal after acknowledging the concerns it created within football.

The statement comes as several football leaders continue to question Infantino's position following the failed commercial rights proposal, which sparked strong opposition from UEFA and several national associations. Norway Football Association president Lise Klaveness has even called for Infantino to resign, arguing that confidence in FIFA's leadership has been damaged.

Argentina, however, has taken the opposite stance.

The AFA praised Infantino's contribution to football development, reforms and governance over the last 10 years, while also recognising his public apology and decision to abandon the proposal.

Argentina is not alone. Mexico, Paraguay and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have also publicly backed the FIFA president, exposing a growing divide between Europe and much of the rest of world football.

The timing of Argentina's support has already sparked debate.

Critics believe the federation is standing by a president who is under intense scrutiny over governance issues. Supporters argue Infantino deserves credit for expanding football development programmes and increasing investment in member associations during his presidency.

One thing is now clear: football is no longer divided only on the pitch.

It is now split in the boardroom too, and Argentina has made it clear which side it has chosen.
