Manchester United appeared destined to leave Merseyside with all three points after Benjamin Šeško restored their lead with an 88th-minute header. But Everton refused to surrender, and Maitland-Niles delivered a sensational equaliser deep into stoppage time.

United had taken the lead through Bryan Mbeumo, who produced a brilliant individual effort early in the second half. Everton responded strongly as Tyrique George levelled proceedings with a powerful strike in the 83rd minute.

The visitors regained control just minutes later when Šeško rose to meet Luke Shaw’s cross and headed United back in front. With time running out, Everton threw men forward in search of one final opportunity.

That moment arrived in stoppage time. Maitland-Niles, making his Everton debut after joining from Lyon, unleashed a spectacular long-range effort that flew into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Senne Lammens with no chance.

The equaliser sparked wild celebrations inside the stadium and denied Michael Carrick’s Manchester United side a valuable victory.

For Everton, the result extended their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign, while United were left frustrated after twice surrendering the lead.

Maitland-Niles’ dream debut could hardly have been more dramatic, as his stunning strike rescued a point with virtually the final kick of the game.
