Matteo Ruggeri Completes Aston Villa Move In Major Defensive Boost
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid, adding another quality option to Unai Emery’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The transfer is understood to be worth €25 million (£21.5 million) guaranteed, with a further €1.5 million in potential add-ons, taking the overall package to around €26.5 million if all bonuses are achieved.
Ruggeri has agreed personal terms with Villa and completed the formalities of the move after deciding to continue his career in the Premier League. The transfer brings an end to his spell at Atlético Madrid, where he gained valuable experience competing at the highest level.
The 24-year-old defender previously made his name at Atalanta, establishing himself as an energetic and attack-minded full-back before earning his move to Spain. His ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch made him an attractive target for Villa, who have been looking to strengthen their options on the left side.
Ruggeri’s arrival is expected to provide competition for the left-back position while giving Emery greater tactical flexibility. His pace, crossing ability and willingness to support attacks fit the demands of the Spanish coach’s system.
For Aston Villa, the deal represents another sizeable investment as the club continues to build a squad capable of competing domestically and in Europe. Emery will be hoping Ruggeri can quickly adapt to the intensity and physical demands of Premier League football.
The Italian defender will now turn his attention to settling into life at Villa Park and earning a regular place in Emery’s starting XI.
With his versatility, technical quality and experience in Serie A and La Liga, Ruggeri arrives with significant expectations. Villa supporters will hope the €26.5m potential package proves to be a worthwhile investment as the club targets another successful season.
